Skin Issues – Enemies of Your Beauty

Woman with acne-free faceEveryone strives for that perfect looking, radiant skin that needs no makeup. Unfortunately with so many factors which can cause acne and even more severe problems, the ideal is becoming ever more unreachable. There are all sort of different skin problems occurring nowadays, that it makes us wonder how people in the early ages lived without makeup and products to fix these issues.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin condition that is becoming more and more common, and it mostly occurs between the ages of 15 and 35, but that doesn’t have to be a rule. What it basically means is that your skin cells grow much faster than they should, to be precise in a matter of days rather than weeks as it should be. Your body normally develops new skin every month or so to replace old one, which normally flakes off, so what happens with psoriasis is that dead skin cells accumulate and leave you with party dry and very red skin. This is not a condition that comes and goes, and even though it can improve with the right treatment, it is chronic.

It is not known what exactly is the cause of psoriasis but some of the factors that have a say are the family history condition, obesity, smoking, uncontrolled stress and use of harsh medications. Genes and immune system are big contributors, since it is believed that the body’s T-cells attack healthy skin cells and the body responds by creating new skin cells, this leading to the accumulation.

Some ways of treating the condition include topical corticosteroids, topical retinoid, salicylic acid and laser therapy. You should consult your dermatologist and create a specific plan on how to fight this issue because not all treatments might work best for you.

Rosacea

Woman with Rosacea

This is a condition that affects certain parts of the face, and it is most common between the age of 30 and 50 years. In most cases it is more common with women but will have harsher effects on men. It is sometimes called Rosacea acne because some symptoms look similar to acne, but in fact aren’t. Some of the symptoms that occur are redness in parts of the face, small red spots or cysts on the face (which look similar to acne), tiny blood vessels under the skin which become more prominent, frequent flushing of the face, and less frequently eye symptoms and thickening of the skin. This condition is usually very noticeable on the skin, painful, itchy or even has a burning sensation.

It is not certain what causes rosacea, but studies show that there are a number of hereditary and environmental factors related to this problem. There were certain correlations between skin overly exposed to sun and rosacea, then, abnormal immune reactions, genetics and many other factors.

Unfortunately there is no direct cure for rosacea but the condition can be helped and controlled by treatments and certain lifestyle changes. Dermatologists will most often initially prescribe antibiotics that may come in various forms- these will help with the inflammation. If that does not work, rosacea patients are often prescribed with more serious acne drugs. As for the lifestyle changes, you should find out what factors irritate your skin the most and steer clear of those; this might involve wearing SPF more, protecting your skin from the cold winter, trying not to irritate it, etc.

Acne

Common acne

Common acne

This is a widely known skin condition and a battle almost everyone faces at some point in their life. Acne occur when pores become plugged with oils, bacteria and dead skin cells, and this condition usually appears on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. There are various types of acne, more or less severe, and they prevalently affect teenagers, but can be a tough one for adults as well.

As our skin is very sensitive, there are actually many things that can cause acne. Many find the cause in genetics, surrounding factors such as air pollution, makeup but also improper diet. Considering all this, there are a variety of cures that may or may not work for each individual. Therefore it is always important to consult a doctor to see what the actual cause of the acne is.  Professional and effective acne treatment, such as laser therapy, is something that is most often a lengthy process but by far the best solution in the long run.

Eczema

Exczema, or Atopic Dermatitis how it is professionally called, is a persistent, itchy, red rash which can appear over the entire body, and can appear at any point in life, although it is diagnosed very early on in most cases. Most common places where it will occur are on the neck, wrists, ankles and generally on areas of your body that bend, like behind the knees. People with eczema mostly suffer from dry and sensitive skin, but the rash itself can be different for each person- sometimes very mild and sometimes so strong that you will scratch your skin until it bleeds.

The causes of eczema are not certain but there are certain irritating triggers such as soaps, detergents, chlorine and different allergens that can make your condition worse.

When having eczema it is very important to take good care of your skin. It is also important to keep you skin hydrated and moist, because dry skin leads to more scratching. Moisturized skin is also important for the effectiveness of the prescription medication- this is why most eczema patients have specific regiments and routines they follow, so schedule an appointment with your dermatologist to determine what is best for you.
